about departments

Ophthalmology (Eye Diseases).

Department of Ophthalmology, was founded in 1983 by Dr. Berati Hasanreisoğlu. Our Department, which consists of inpatient service, vitreous and retinal diseases, neuro-ophthalmology, cornea, pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, refractive surgery, glaucoma, oculoplastic and contact lens units, is one of the reference Departments in our country. Our department has a 27-bed clinic on the 13th floor of D Block and 13 and -1 Floors of C Block.

Approximately 4000 surgeries are performed annually with the most modern equipment every day of the week in the general and local operating rooms of our Department, which provides service in the polyclinics on the first floor.

Services

Glaucoma Unit: Our Department’s Glaucoma Unit was established in 1989 and founded  by Dr.Merih Önol. For patients presenting with early or advanced glaucoma our unit provides advanced surgical treatments. These treatments applied by applying diagnostic tests such as pachymetry, visual field, nerve fiber analysis and ultrasound biomicroscopy. In addition to trabeculectomy, cataract surgery, combined phaco-trabeculectomy, seton surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma congenital glaucoma surgeries; Argon laser iridotomy and peripheral iridoplasty procedures are performed.

Cornea Unit: Our cornea unit was founded by Dr. Fikret Akata in 1990. In 2013, Dr. Bahri Aydin and Dr. Cüneyt Özmen joined the Cornea Unit. Corneal unit is focused on penetral and deep lamellar keratoplasty, endothelial keratoplasty, ocular surface and anterior segment reconstructive surgeries, anterior and posterior segment combined surgeries.

Our Eye Banking activities, which are carried out meticulously, were rearranged in 2005 according to the latest legislation and certified by the Ministry of Health.

Retina Unit: Our department’s retina unit was founded by Dr. Meral Or and Dr. Berati Hasanreisoğlu in 1985. In this period, vitreoretinal surgeries were started to be performed together with interventions such as fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) and argon laser photocoagulation in the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases. In 1989, with the participation of Dr. Haluk Akbatur, the activities in the retina unit gained rapidness. Dr. Haluk Akbatur left the clinic in 1995. Following, Dr. Gökhan Gürelik who completed his specialty training at our clinic in 1998, joined the retina unit as a specialist. When our unit became more experienced and equipped Dr. Şengül Özdek joined the unit. Having received his education atour clinic in 2013, Dr. Ahmet Murad Hondur joined the retina unit.

The retina unit of our clinic is one of the leading retina clinics in Turkey and leads many diagnoses and treatments. In our clinic, a large number and variety of 20G and 23G vitreoretinal surgeries are performed 5 days a week, interventional procedures such as FFA, argon laser photocoagulation, optical coherence tomography (OCT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), electrophysiological tests, intravitreal treatments, transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) are performed. It is a fully equipped center. 50-60 vitreoretinal surgeries are performed per week and 150-200 medical retinal patients are seen and necessary outpatient interventions are performed.

Oculoplastic and Orbita Unit: The unit was founded in 1992 by Dr. Mehmet Ünal.

Dr. Mehmet Ünal worked in the field of Oculoplastic and Orbita at London Moorfields Eye Hospital in 1994. In 2001, Dr. Onur Konuk joined the Oculoplastic and Orbita Unit as a faculty member. In our unit, advanced surgical treatments are applied to patients who apply with valve diseases, lacrimal diseases, socket problems and orbital diseases. Orbitotomy surgery for orbital tumor excision is routinely performed in our unit. In our country, the first orbital decompression in thyroid orbitopathy was performed in our clinic in 1994 and this surgery was performed on 190 eyes between 1994 and 2009. Endoscopic DCR surgeries have been routinely performed in our clinic since 2004. In addition to standard oculoplastic surgery instruments, special instruments such as nasal endoscopy, diode laser dacryocystorhinostomy, surgical micromotor system, head lamp-camera system are used in this unit.

Uvea-Behçet Oncology Unit: The Uvea-Behçet/Oncology unit was separated from its former Retina unit in 2011 and was established as a new unit in order to improve the diagnosis and treatment conditions, it is interested to provide more specific service to this patient group. Head of the unit, Dr. Murat Hasanreisoğlu, worked as a clinical observer at Moorfields Eye Hospital, Uvea Clinic, the leading eye hospital in Europe, London in 2012 and worked on “uveitis”. In 2014 he worked on eye tumors for 1 year at Wills Eye Hospital, Ocular Oncology Clinic, one of the best eye hospitals in the USA.

Uvea-Behçet/Oncology unit works intensively on two basic eye disease groups and offers advanced diagnosis/treatment opportunities.

1) Uveitis: There is the latest technological equipment in our unit to make the advanced treatment and diagnosis such as , (Fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green (ICG) angiography, high resolution optical coherence tomography, fundus autofluorescence, ultrasound biomicroscopy, electrophysiological tests, computerized visual field, etc.),  facilities (diagnostic pars plana vitrectomy, aspiration biopsies, etc.) are offered to patients at the highest level. In addition, medical and surgical treatments of diseases such as cataracts, retinal tears, hemorrhages and detachments caused by these diseases are successfully and routinely applied. The main uveitis-related conditions treated in our unit are;

  • Infectious and non-infectious anterior, middle, posterior uveitis,
  • Behçet’s uveitis,
  • Uveitis associated with autoimmune diseases (sarcoidosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, etc.),
  • Uveitis associated with arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, etc.),
  • Sclerites,
  • Intraocular infections,
  • Inflammatory diseases of the retina; retinitis and retinal vasculitides,
  • Inflammations of the optic nerve head (papillitis).

2) Eye Tumors: In our unit, the diagnosis of benign or malignant eye tumors of adult and children are made using the latest technological facilities (Fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green (ICG) angiography, high resolution optical coherence tomography, fundus autofluorescence, ultrasound biomicroscopy, electrophysiological tests, computer vision field, etc.) is used. Drug and radiation treatments of eye tumors are carried out in coordination with the relevant departments in our hospital, surgical and laser-assisted treatments are applied by us personally. In addition to the treatment of malignant melanoma (adult) and retinoblastoma (childhood), which are relatively more common malignant intraocular tumors, the main tumors that are diagnosed and treated are the following :

  • Benign and malignant tumors of the conjunctiva
  • Cysts, pigmented (dark) masses, nevus, pterygium
  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Malignant melanoma
  • Lymphomas
  • Benign and malignant tumors of the iris, ciliary body and choroid
  • Pigmented (dark) masses; nevus etc.
  • Malignant melanoma
  • Hemangioma
  • Metastases
  • Lymphomas
  • Benign and malignant tumors of the retina
  • Retinoblastoma
  • Hemangioblast
  • Lymphomas

Refractive Surgery: Our Refractive Surgery Unit is one of the first refractive surgery centers in Turkey, was founded in 1994 by Dr. Fikret Akata and Dr. Kamil Bilgihan. In 2010, Dr. Ahmet Murad Hondur joined the academic staff.

One of our studies focused on excimer laser surgery, keratoconus treatments, excimer laser-assisted lamellar keratoplasty, corneal crosslinking, and refractive surgery after keratoplasty, which we call the “Gazi Technique”. In addition, different lens applications are made for prosthetic contact lenses, keratoconus and aphakia.

As a result of the scientific studies carried out in our unit, ESCRS Poster won the first prize in 2000 and 2015, and the second best study awards in the National Congress in 2014 and 2015.

As a result of the scientific studies carried out in our unit, ESCRS Poster won the first prize in 2000 and 2015, and the second best study awards in the National Congress in 2014 and 2015.

Excimer laser-assisted keratoplasty techniques were published as a review titled “New techniques in lamellar keratoplasty” in the journal “Current Opinion in Ophthalmology” in 2002. In addition, these keratoplasty techniques were published in the first edition of the 2007 book “Surgical Techniques in Anterior and Posterior Lamellar Corneal Surgery”and the second edition of 2010.

Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Unit: It was founded by Dr. Kamil Bilgihan in 1993. In 2013, Dr. Tuğba Atalay joined our unit as a lecturer. In our unit, strabismus and amblyopia, pediatric cataracts, retinopathy of prematurity and other pediatric eye diseases are treated.
